Contact Drill : Ruck Square (Ruck/Maul)

Drill Explanation:

Four player attacking and four players defending holding shields.

The attacking players work from one contact point to another, either in a set pattern or randomly.

Ball carrier hits one contact point and two players clean area.

Support players to communicate to ball carrier. Example : stay on feet, go to ground.

Ball is produced to third player who picks and hits the next contact point.

This drill can be adapted to work within a fixed number of contact points or to a set time.

Vary drill by staying on feet in contact.

Example : 6 contact points or work for 60 seconds.

To use this drill as a stamina drill set a fixed time to work for.

To look at technical issues set a number of contact points.

**Contact Points - Hitting a Pad

Objective:

Develop communication in contact.

Equipment:

1 Ball, 4 Shields.

Key Factors / Coaching Points:

- Ball carriers body positions at contact. Low strong position to high.
- Communication from support players.
- Ball carrier to take contact on own terms.
- Ball carrier to present ball in a secure manner.
- Support players to hit contact from low to high.
- Support players to take defender out past the ball.
- Keep chin off the chest and eyes open.
- Keep back / spine parallel to floor.
- Support players clean contact area by binding on each other from a strong low position to high. Keeping shoulders above hips.
- Feet position of ball carrier in contact.
- Footwork before contact.
- Move the pad holder with the use of good footwork.
- Identify a weak area to hit / take contact
